As a volunteer I’ve spent four months in at Newtown International School. One of the main reasons I chose to go to Ghana was to experience the culture. While in Ghana, I took every chance to travel with my fellow volunteers and to find out more about the rich Ghanaian culture. Music and dancing are very important to Ghanaians. You can’t miss it: everywhere you look, people are dancing or making music. Whether you like to dance or not, when Ghanaians show their dance qualities, you will be deeply touched. During my stay in Ghana, I met people from one of the many dance and drumming groups in Ghana and through them, I and other volunteers got the chance to learn dancing and drumming the Ghanaian way. We had lessons for two weeks in Cape Coast. For two weeks, every day at 6 in the morning, we learned about African dancing and we danced for two hours, outside in the sun on a cement floor. After the classes, we exercised drumming for two hours. Our hands got seriously challenged on the hand- made drums. I learned a lot in those two weeks. Besides learning lots, we had a good time with our teachers, Sammy and Anan. They taught us about the importance of dance and music in the Ghanaian culture and they took us to different performances. They even gave us the chance to perform! It was a very good experience that I wouldn’t have wanted to miss and that made my Ghana trip complete. - Lisa - Questions? e-mail me: lisa@freiburg.nl © OCEP Foundation
