If you choose to volunteer in Ghana, you are up for an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life! On this page we will explain our admission criteria for volunteers as well as what you can expect during and after your application. Admission criteria We want to give an as large as possible group of young people the chance to experience volunteering in Ghana. At the same time, experience has taught us that it is important that you come to us with a certain background and skill set to make your stay in Ghana a success. We evaluate each interested volunteer on the following criteria: (1) Your age needs to be above 18 years on the day of setting off to Ghana. (2) Your motivation is important to us. You need to be strongly motivated to make your volunteering time in Ghana a success. (3) Your English needs to be good enough so that you can be comfortable in an all-English speaking environment. Making mistakes is ok, as long as you can get your point across without too much of a struggle. If you wish to be a teacher we will expect a higher English level. (4) Flexibility. Life in a developing country is full of surprises, and they are not always positive. Can you deal with being on the road for a full road because your bus broke down mid-trip, or with doing without electricity for a number of days? (5) Minimum time commitment is 6 weeks. We ask you to volunteer at least 6 weeks at your project, because you will take time to get used to your new environment and the work. For you and your project to get the maximum out of your assignment, the recommended volunteering period is 3 months. (6) Work and travel experience are highly valued, because they can demonstrate to us that you have the motivation and flexibility to make things work out in Ghana. But since we believe in creating the chance for people to live a new experience, it is not a 'hard' requirement as long as you can demonstrate that you have what it takes to make your volunteer time in Ghana a success. Steps to join (1) Fill out the application form In the application form, we ask you questions to learn more about you, your background and what you want to do in Ghana. Do have a look at our projects before filling out the form, as we will be asking your project preferences in the form. (2) Telephone interview The next step is a telephone interview. During this interview, we will ask you questions based on your application form. It is also a good time to ask any questions you may have. So before the interview, be sure to write down any questions you want to ask. (3) Selection outcome We will notify you by e-mail on the outcome of your interview. If you are accepted, we will send you payment instructions as well as a declaration to sign. (4) Information package When we receive your payment and declaration, we will send you the OCEP preparation package, a PDF file with practical information for your preparation and time in Ghana. (5) Project confirmed Within about 2 weeks from sending the preparation package, we will let you know at which project you were placed. We will ask you to book your flight to arrive at a certain date and send us your flight details. (6) Airport pick-up And then ... we will be there when you arrive at Accra International Airport to get you started and bring you to your project. Are you ready to join? Then wait no longer, and proceed to our application form! |
